Also known as ?Myraciaria Dubia?, camu camu is a small berry native to the Amazon rainforest boasting one of the highest vitamin C contents of any plant in the world. Cultivated for over a century, camu camu is reputed to have medicinal properties among indigenous tribes.
Camu camu berries grow on bushy trees that surround Amazonian river basins, thriving in flooded soils during the rainy season. As an ideal food source for fish swimming in the Amazon river, the name camu camu is believed to originate from the distinct ?camu? sound made as fish pluck floating fruits from the water?s surface.
Among native Peruvians camu camu is believed to promote a long and healthy life. Phenolic compounds such as carotenoids, flavonoids and anthocyanins present in camu camu are associated with contributing to antioxidant and immune stimulant benefits. With a high vitamin C content, consuming camu camu regularly can contribute to normal collagen formation for normal function of the skin, blood vessels, bones, cartilage, gums, and teeth.
